JOHANNES (JOE) KJARTANSON 1930 - 2005 Beloved husband, father and afi passed away peacefully September 27, 2005. He will be lovingly remembered by wife Joy, children, Lynda (Phil) and grandson Rick; Bruce; Sheila and grandchildren, Kathryn and Austin; and Melissa. Predeceased by infant daughter Joanne, sister Bennetta and brother Phillip. Joe was born April 24, 1930 to Jon and Kristjana Kjartanson, the eldest of seven children and grew up on Hecla Island. As a young man, he worked freighting on Lake Winnipeg, and was a commercial fisherman, trapper, and dragline operator in Northern Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia. Joe married Joy Thorarinson of Riverton October 27, 1962. They lived and raised their family first on Hecla and then in Riverton. Summers he worked as a dragline operator in southern Manitoba and fished on Lake Winnipeg the rest of the year. He took pride in working hard, being able to provide for his family, and creating a comfortable home and property for them. Some of the family's fondest memories are of boat trips around the lake for camping, swimming and berry picking, picnics (summer and winter), and horseback riding. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him great happiness. Thank you to family and friends who visited Joe in the hospital. Especially his brother Oskar and his wife Sandra, and sister Sylvia, who travelled long distances to be at his side. All your visits were greatly appreciated by both Joe and his family. The family also wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Arborg and District Health Centre. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial services. Gilbart Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
